Analysing Gaga’s Abracadabra: Intro and backgrounds
When I first heard Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra, the little elitist occultist inside me stirred. I thought, “Ah, here we go again. Someone using this ancient word without understanding its true meaning.”
Oh, how wrong I was!
This song hit me on a visceral level. It felt less like a pop track and more like an invocation – a spell being woven through melody and intention. It’s not often that mainstream artists play with esoteric language so consciously, and yet, here we are. Gaga has crafted something deeply symbolic, and whether you feel it in your gut or not, the magick is there.
At first, I didn’t quite grasp why it resonated so strongly. But then, I started really listening. To the words, the structure, the hidden meaning beneath the surface.
That’s when I realized: this isn’t just a song. It’s an initiation.

The angle of this interpretation
To understand the chosen angle and my interpretations, there are two things useful to know:
1) By profession, I come from the world of games, business and digital experiences, but my mind is equally drawn to the old secrets of the world and the hidden mechanisms of reality. I practise the ability to shape one’s existence with intent.
2) I’m at a defining moment in my life, shaping the framework for everything that comes next. It’s a phase of relentless pressure, of pushing against the weight of existence itself. Will my final thoughts tell me I chose right? That I followed the right path? That I truly lived?
And once you read further, you’ll understand why this song resonated so strongly.
A quick summary
Abracadabra is about the spiritual experience of enduring pain, facing oneself, and coming out transformed.
The meaning mirrors that battle against life’s crushing weight: the fear of choosing wrong, of failing, of wasting this rare, fragile existence. “Pay the toll to the angels.” What is the price of living fully? And am I paying it to the right forces?
Lady Gaga herself confirms this in her interview for Elle:
"The song is about facing the challenge of life and the challenge of the night and finding the magic in it all. - - I wanted to crack open what it means to persevere. And explore the metaphor of perseverance on the dance floor, because the dance floor is - for me, anyway - it has always been the place where I try to improve myself as a human being. How do I work harder? Have more passion? How do I give more of my authentic self? How do I earn my spot as a performer?"
-Lady Gaga / Elle
Then there’s the Lady in Red, the whispering shadow in my mind. The inner voice, seductive and ruthless, asking: What happens if you don’t succeed? What if you make the wrong choice?
And yet, Abracadabra isn’t about submission to fear. It’s about stepping into the fire – dancing with your demons instead of running from them. Or perhaps more so that the song paints the image of what it can be iif you stop escaping and instead, start living.
When you realize that self-creation is an act of magic, and you are both the magician and the spell itself. You are the architect of your reality.
Abracadabra is structured like an initiation. It follows a sequence found in esoteric traditions, psychological transformation, and rites of passage:
- Recognition of struggle – “Pay the toll to the angels.” Every transformation demands a cost.
- Encounter with fate – “The Lady in Red” challenges you. The internal monologue that questions everything.
- The moment of choice – “Death or love tonight.” A symbolic decision: embrace change or remain stagnant. (Ah, us, the followers of the Chrysalis path, love this!)
- The final manifestation – “Cast your spell on the night.” The transition from contemplation to action.
What Lady Gaga says about Abracadabra
Lady Gaga describes Abracadabra as a song about facing life’s challenges, embracing the unknown, and finding magic within it all. She speaks of the challenge of the night, that moment of confrontation with the world, with others, and most critically, with oneself. The Lady in Red, as Gaga explains, is that internal voice—the force that tests, doubts, and ultimately pushes one toward self-realization.
Gaga herself frames the song as an exploration of what it means to thrive rather than merely survive. The tension between struggle and transcendence is not just a lyrical theme—it is embedded into the song’s rhythm, repetition, and structure.
The power of Abracadabra lies in how it positions the listener. It does not offer passive escapism but instead invites engagement with the very forces it describes. The Lady in Red does not merely exist in the song—she is in every person who hears it, asking the same questions:
What will you do with what you know? What will you create?
The Details

What Does the word Abracadabra actually Mean?
You can’t quite talk about the song meaning without analyzing the keyword: Abracadabra. The word Abracadabra has a rich history that extends beyond its modern use as a stage magician’s catchphrase. There’s almost a child-like naivistic connotation nowadays, but this word is actually much more than gibberish in children’s entertainment. Its origins suggest a profound esoteric meaning tied to creation, transformation, and protection.
- “I Create as I Speak” – One of the most widely accepted origins is the Aramaic phrase “Avrah Kedabra”, meaning “I create as I speak.” This aligns with mystical traditions that emphasize the power of words in shaping reality, much like Gaga’s use of verbal magic in Abracadabra.
- A Protective Talisman – In the 2nd century CE, the word was used as a healing spell, written in a triangular formation to ward off illness. The gradual disappearance of letters symbolized the fading of disease.
- A Gnostic Connection – Some link Abracadabra to Abraxas, a mystical deity in Gnostic traditions, further associating the word with spiritual transformation.
- Alchemy and Manifestation – In esoteric traditions, the word represents the process of creation and dissolution, mirroring alchemical principles of transformation (solve et coagula).
- From Ritual to Illusion – Over time, Abracadabra lost its mystical weight and became a generic phrase for tricks and illusions, yet its original power as a word of intent and creation remains.
Gaga revives the ancient concept of words as magical forces, using the songas an invocation of transformation itself.
“Amor” and “Morta”
The song moves in ritualistic cycles, reinforcing the duality between love (amor) and death (morta):
“Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na
Abracadabra, morta-oo-ga-ga”
In an esoteric and symbolic context, love and life can sometimes be equated, as love is seen as a life force, a creative principle, or a counterbalance to death.
The dual forces of love and death, creation and dissolution, are ancient symbols of transformation. You cannot have one without the other. This chant reminds me of alchemical texts – solve et coagula – where breaking apart is a necessary step for rebuilding into something greater. Destruction is the sacred price of creation. (Yes, this is also exactly what the Temple of Chrysalis and the Edict teaches us. Like our Edict states: “Resurrection requires death.”)
Transformation isn’t a gentle drift from one state to another. It is a rupture, a violent reordering, a necessary death. And only those who understand this will ever grasp what true power feels like.
This is a law of existence, as unshakable as gravity, as real as the breath in your lungs. Every great metamorphosis begins with annihilation: the shedding of illusions, the evisceration of false identities, the ruthless destruction of what no longer serves you.
You may know I’m a fan of butterfly symbolism: The caterpillar does not merely grow wings – it dissolves into chaos and is reborn as something unrecognizable. You have lived this before, whether you know it or not.
While “love and death” are of course also rather overused poetic contrasts, in this Lady Gaga’s context, they are the scaffolding of reality itself. And maybe that’s the true power of this song: it invites you to embrace destruction as part of becoming.
“Pay the Toll to the Angels” – The Price of Enlightenment
“Pay the toll to the angels, drawing circles in the clouds.”
This line haunted me. It speaks of sacrifice, of cost, of passage. Every act of transformation requires something in return. I found myself wondering: what am I paying for in my own life?
- Paying a toll could signify the trials required to transcend limitations.
- “Drawing circles in the clouds” may reference sacred geometry and ritual space, emphasizing the need for focus in manifesting one’s intent.
This seems like a reminder that nothing comes without cost.
But how many of us are willing to invest in your own evolution? And are we investing in the right resources and partners?

“The Lady in Red”
“Like a poem said by a lady in red, you hear the last few words of your life.”
In my first interpretation, I associated the Lady in Red with the inner voice that challenges us and forces us to confront uncomfortable truths. That voice that asks, “What will you think about on your deathbed?”
In her interview to Elle, Lady Gaga shared more about how she thinks about the Lady in Red:
"The lady in red is all of you that puts you to the test. Your internal monologue. 'Can you do it? Can you do it? Will you do it? Are you good enough? Can you handle it?' In a lot of ways, the song is about dealing with that challenge to yourself and very often the world around us can reflect it back to us as well. I wanted to explore the question, 'What does it feel like to thrive and not just be surviving all the time?'"
- Lady Gaga / Elle
The archetype she invokes has a long and fascinating history. The Lady in Red appears throughout esoteric traditions, often serving as a threshold guardian. She is neither ally nor enemy, but something far more unsettling: a force that confronts, questions, and demands resolution. She is the whisper of doubt before a transformation, the gaze that holds your reflection steady when you’d rather turn away.
In Thelemic thought, she bears a striking resemblance to Babalon, the Scarlet Woman, an embodiment of desire, liberation, and the raw, untamed power of initiation. And Babalon isn’t the only “Lady in Red”. Perhaps some of these feel familiar?
The concept of “Lady in Red”
- The Woman in Red (Faustian Lore) – In various versions of Faust, a mysterious woman in red appears as an omen or guide toward damnation or revelation.
- The Woman in Red (The Matrix) – A simulated distraction used to test Neo’s perception of reality and focus.
- The Devil in Red Dresses (Various Films & Tropes) – Many femme fatale characters wear red to symbolize danger, seduction, or the power to shift destinies.
- Babalon (The Scarlet Woman) – Thelema’s divine feminine archetype of liberation, power, and initiation.
- Lilith – The rebellious first woman in some Jewish traditions, often seen as a figure of temptation, empowerment, and challenge.
- Morrígan – The Celtic goddess of war and fate, often appearing in red robes or bloodied battle attire, testing heroes in moments of transformation.
But while Babalon and some of the other red ladies offer transcendence through surrender, the Lady in Red in Abracadabra is something more personal, more psychological. She is not here to grant knowledge, but to force a reckoning with what you already know yet refuse to face.
Her words, described in the song as the last few of your life, suggest a point of no return. An instant where old identities collapse, and you are left standing at the edge of yourself. The moment where you truly see yourself: the regrets, the hesitations, the choices left untaken.
What kind of inspiration could a Chrysalid draw from this? Well, again, this aligns with the fundamental principle of the Temple of Chrysalis: transformation is not granted; it is claimed. The Lady in Red is a mirror, but she does not offer an answer. She offers a challenge.
And how you respond to that challenge determines what you become.
At the Elle’s interview, Gaga is asked whether she defeats the Lady in Red at the end of the music video. Gaga replied:
"To me, in this video, she initiates the challenge and this purer side of me that is peering up at all of the negative backtalk, all of the doubt, and facing all that side of me, she completely comes through. And she says, 'I'm up for the challenge.' And it's interesting because we had all these different ways that we thought about the video ending and ultimately I wanted this song to be about resilience in a way the song Disease was not."

“It’s Time to Cast Your Spell on the Night” – The Call to Power
“With a haunting dance, now you’re both in a trance,
It’s time to cast your spell on the night.”
At this point, the structure of the song directs the listener into a specific state of mind. The repeating lyrics, the rhythmic build-up, and the imperative phrase sharpen the focus and reinforce intent.
Gaga constructs the song like a spell, using repetition and gradual intensification as activating elements. This mirrors traditional rituals designed to lead participants into trance or heightened concentration. The effect is not accidental. Gaga is too smart for it to be unintentional. Music, when structured correctly, can influence cognitive processes such as focus, emotional charge, and perception of momentum.
“Cast your spell on the night” is a simple lyric, but it functions as a direct magical command. It follows a sequence that has already prepared the mind for action. This moment is not isolated. It is the culmination of a structure that has been meticulously built up throughout the song.
This makes Abracadabra unique compared to conventional pop music. It does not merely touch upon its theme on a surface level; it becomes an instrument that produces the very effect it describes. This could be understood as a form of meta-magic, where both content and form work together to create something that is not just heard but experienced.
Gaga is not just describing a spell – she is executing one.

Phantom of the Dance Floor (…or the opera?)
“Phantom of the dance floor, come to me
Sing for me a sinful melody”
Just when Abracadabra seems to have fully established its esoteric framework, another presence emerges: the Phantom.
This line immediately recalls Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera. The “Phantom” is the masked, mysterious figure who lingers in the shadows, seducing a ballet dancer Christine into a world of passion, music, and obsession.
In the music from the Phantom of the Opera, you’ll also hear repeatedly the phrases “Come to me” and “Sing for me.“
Phantom offers a “sinful melody”, a forbidden call, much like how music itself acts as a trance, a spell that alters perception. The Phantom calls you into movement. He is the pulse of life itself, the rhythm that cannot be resisted.
And the Lady in Red? She is not immune to it. But the key is, you hae to invite the Phantom. “Come to me”. “Sing for me.” When you CHOOSE transformation, you also pull the Lady in Red into the haunting dance, into the rhythm of something greater. Perhaps this is a moment of transcendence, when resistance is no longer needed because you have stepped fully into the magic of life.
The struggle, the self-doubt, the hesitation – all dissolve in the dance. You don’t fight anymore. You become part of the magic.
This moment suggests that the initiation is complete. The one who questioned you, who tested you, now dances with you. And maybe, that’s what true transformation looks like: not conquering the voice of doubt, but bringing it into harmony with your own rhythm.
Because once you are in the trance, once you cast your spell on the night, there is no more question of if you are ready.
You already are.
…And that brings to my mind a very specific metagand of Chrysalis: “The Words of Beauty.”
…Which translates to:
Chrysalis is beautiful – as am I
Chrysalis is divine – as am I
My Self in metamorphosis
My Mind in trance/opening its eyes
My Body in love
…I am whole.
…Are you starting to understand why this song resonates so much for the Chrysalis Path?
Finally:
Writing this analysis turned out to be an initiation of its own, mirroring the very themes of the song. I began writing calmly, taking my time, until suddenly, similar analyses started surfacing elsewhere.
Of course, the Lady in Red whispered to me: “See? Again, you were too slow. Why even bother? You weren’t first. You could never be convincing.”
I fought back. Nothing was stopping me from finishing what I had started. But then came the question: What should I do with this text? Should I push it further?
I decided to try my best – to bring forward ideas I hadn’t yet seen discussed. But that meant that suddenly my 3h writing would take closer to 10 hours to create. Hours that I kinda didn’t have to give.
Soon, I realized I was caught in the very turbulence of life. I hadn’t published anything here in a long time, so it felt important to make this piece good. It would break the silence. But the more analyses were published, the heavier the pressure grew.
“Your text is garbage,” the Lady in Red whispered. “It’s chaotic. It’s too long. It lacks structure. Are you seriously prioritizing this over everything else in your life? You were supposed to be working on your e-book, building your business. This text won’t bring you anything. Nothing. You’re contributing to the very thing that will make you lie on your deathbed thinking you never accomplished anything real.”
The piece was nearly finished. It blurred before my eyes. But it was so close…
“You won’t do it. Go rest. Watch Netflix. Everyone else is wasting time: why not just surrender to it? Overachiever. Pathetic perfectionist. Shame on you. You try too hard. Cringe.”
I pressed play.
I took a few sharp breaths. I clenched my jaw, wiped my tears, and looked the Lady in Red straight in the eyes.
“Shut up. This is what I choose. This is what I create. We’re doing this now.”
And we did.
Here you go. I hope this gave you something new to think about.
